Brick - Mason Guild Ball Centre Back

Well I jumped into another game and I love it. Guild Ball!!! I chose Mason's before I knew anything about the game. I had a scheme in my head of how to paint them. I painted Brick to establish the scheme and I am pleased with how he turned out. One down, five to go.

Ironscale - Super Dungeon Explore

I have really been enjoying painting Super Dungeon Explore figs lately. Love the bright colors and the models. Has really been a good time. I am just trying to paint them for tabletop quality but every blue moon I get in a groove and just push it a little further. The shield's on these ironscale would be one of those times. The models were just turning out so bright and cool that it just happened. These pop off the board for me which just adds richness to the game. I look forward to posting more Super Dungeon Explore figs. Plus the game is a blast to play and my boys love it. We also have gaming nights where we have multiple games of it going on at once. Good times!!!

Witchling Stalkers - Wyrd

I am have assembled some Malifaux figs so not it is time to sling some paint on these bad boys. I really like the 2nd Wave figs. To be honest I chose the figs before I knew what any of them could do. So that is why I went with the Guild. Here are some Witchling Stalkers I have been painting over the Thanksgiving Holiday. I wanted them all to be different but at the same time have something that would tie them all together. So I have my Jawa Stalker, my Shaolin Monk Stalker and my Outdoorsman Stalker.

My Shaolin Stalker was based with Pigskin and then washed with Burnt Sienna. When I started bring up the color I mixed the two together progressing to straight Pigskin. After that I mixed white with it to bring up the highlights.

With my Jawa Stalker I started out with Calvary Brown as the base. I mixed Black with it to created the wash. I think mixed Black with it again but just a tad lighter to start bringing it up. Once I progressed to straight Calvary Brown I mixed Raw Sienna with it to bring it up.

The Outdoorsman Stalker I based with Olive Yellow and washed with Olive Drab. Then I mixed the two to bring it up. Once I progressed to Olive Yellow I mixed white with it to achieve the hightlights.

I was watching Edge of Tomorrow with Tom Cruise and saw the soldiers that were with the Full Metal B!$%# and was reminded of the bandanna skulls I have seen around. I thought if I could pull that off on these dudes that would be what ties them together. I was nervous to make the leap but decided, "What the heck!" I think I got lucky and they look halfway decent.

Wrongeye and Snapjaw...

Wrongeye and Snapjaw was done as a donation for the Intermountain Cup (IMC). It is a local Warmachine\Hordes event that gather player from Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Washington, etc... It is a qualifying event so it is a big deal. The Geek Garage would run a painting contest and also paint miniatures to be given away to the players. Up to this point everything I had been painting for gaming event would be sold off by the person who won them. This time around we were trying to paint some Mercs\Minions so there would be a good chance the player would keep them because they could use them in their armies. My goal as I have said before was for players to use them. It ended up that these figs got sold as well and the majority of the others our group had painted even before they left the store. Oh well I guess. I just don't have it in me anymore to keep giving free figs to people that just turn around and get ride of them even if they can use them. So now I use that energy to paint for my children and myself. I don't regret doing it because the event was fun and it was some good times. Just past that phase. Anyway these figs were done mostly with washes. I also did a small GG on the hat for Geek Garage.

Constance Blaize - Cygnar

I painted this as a commission. I felt guilty for taking so long on it that when I finished it I just gave the fig to the person. They were very eager to take it for free. Haha... It was not a fun fig to paint at all. I am not sure why however because it is a nice fig. When it is all said and done I do like the final results. Just was not enjoyable at the time. Just one of those things I guess. Haha... I did not do the base that was done by the individual who owned the miniature.

Brood - Murtros WIP

This has been a little bit challenging because of the chitin style body this fig has as well as the skin. I am painting this for a friend and he gave me the skin color, the blue armor and then said I could do whatever else I wanted. I wanted to make it earthy and has some input from some fellow painter for confirmation of color choices. I am currently working on the weapon and have yet to finish the chitin on the blade. I am thinking of going with the same color as the shield.

Morvahna The Autumnblade

This fig I painted for a friend of mine who played a tournament I was donating a fig too. I game him the option to take the pig I was painting or have me paint an actual model he would use in his army. So he chose Morvahna. I wanted to paint her really bright so she would stand out. All of the scheme's I have seen so far were dark green. I think she turned out okay and my friend seemed to enjoy her. When I paint figs for other I would hope that they would be placed on the table to play with instead of sitting on some shelf.

Black Templar Bike Chaplain...

I painted this guy several years ago but he is still one of my favorite figs I have painted. This Black Templar Bike Chaplain was at a time when I had just read an article in White Dwarf about painting flesh. So I tried the layering and it turned out okay. Since then I have changed how I do flesh but it was still fun to paint.

Andras, Overlord Captain...

For my son Ethan's army I painted Andras for his Warlord Overlord army. His color scheme is green and bronze. I also decided to paint all of the faces white when it allows and looks good. Thought that would be a fun touch for his army. His army also has a tint of green to it as well.

Gauntfield - Necropolis Hero

This miniature I painted a little while ago for my son's Warlord Necropolis army. His theme is gray and purple. I learned something when painting the pants on this guy and have used that color mix since. Makes it look ghostly. This was a fun fig to paint especially when it came to painting the head.

Overlord Shadow Legionnaire's...

I have wanted to paint miniatures for my children so I have been snagging some here and there from their armies. These are my son Ethan's figs, a couple of Shadow Legionnaire's for his Overlord army. Warlord is the one system he has the most figs in. Really fun game. His scheme is green and bronze. Just painting them well enough for tabletop gaming.

I started gaming a while back. Some of my first games were GreyHawk, Squad Leader, Mustangs and Messerschmidt's. Some of the first figs I owned were from a local guy and were done from a spinning wheel. Then Minifig and Ral Partha came along and we started getting better quality figs. How things have changed. I don't recall the manufacturer of the first fig I did but it was an Orc of the White Hand.

I dabbled in painting but never really became serious or tried to evolve for years. I remember when washes started hitting the scene and thought they were so cool. It hasn't been since about 2006-2007 that I really started getting back into the hobby side of it. I was mostly an RPG player when it came to miniature based games but my real love was still WWII games. I really like the era so I sought out games. I got back into terrain making when I join TerrainThralls. I made a bunker to show what I could do. Then my first serious project was the Roadhouse. I posted that on the Privateer Press forums as a WIP. I started playing tabletop games again when Hordes first came out a SoCal and I got the Circle of Orboros box from someone who went there. Playing that starter box was brutal. I then wanted to challenge myself with a terrain project and saw a very cool picture in a No Quarter magazine. I wanted to replicate it. So I did. I created the art work and posted it on the Privateer Press forum and was then contacted to see if I would be interested in having that in the magazine. Luckily I had taken pictures of it so I could turn it into a tutorial.

After that I did three more tutorials for No Quarter. Due to the criteria of what they wanted me to do I learned how to do more techniques that I otherwise may have never done. That was cool to do. It was something I wanted to see if I could do. I then wanted to compete in a painting contest other that something local. Just to see how I would fair. I also wanted to see figs in person that were done by professionals. I was blown away. So many amazing and talented people. So I had mentioned that to a friend of mine and he aided me in going to GenCon. I liked terrain so it was an easy choice to make a diorama. I was fortunate to take second place and was beat by Jennifer Haley. 

I would like to compete more but so far I have only done so locally. My most recent was at the 2014 Salt City Gladiator Games in the Salty Dwarf competition they had. I was lucky and place a couple of figs one of which was my Thoth fig.

A short time after I went to GenCon I started a website called Salmondworks because I had family that wanted to have a place to post their work. Later I had a couple of friends approach me who wanted to start a website called Geek Garage where we would post our work. I thought it best to take down the website for Salmondworks in order to help get the site off the ground. I have only kept the Facebook page and have rarely posted on it. Now that my children are older they would like to start posting their stuff out there so a few of us started Totem Badgers. We went with a name that would be more neutral because we have some future painters that are local (and web) friends of ours and thought it best to leave all Sir Names out of the title.

I have never learned how to do a wet pallet. I use tin foil right now due to the fact that is all I could afford when I was a kid. Haha... I would like to learn how to use a wet pallet especially after watching Jennifer Haley's video. I am also branching out with terrain and trying new things and Rackham was my inspiration there. The Latigo Posse - Wyrd Miniatures

Busted out another posse last night. They are not overly difficult to assemble. Because of the amount of parts they are just time consuming to clean. I guess I have put together enough models in my time that I enjoyed it. I needed them for today so necessity I guess is the mother of motivation. Haha... This is my son Jake's posse. So far I am very well pleased with the Wyrd Miniatures I have assembled so far. They are pretty sweet. I will be picking up The Latigo Posse for myself at some point.

The Torch and the Blade: Sonnia

I needed to take a break from everything and sit down and assemble some of my Wyrd miniatures. I need two posses for Friday. My son Ethan and I had a demo last week at Hajomaje (Local Game Store) from Henchman Clayton. It was a blast. He did an excellent job on teaching us. The only problem for me was I was using all of his miniatures. That was fine and all but I need to get mine put together. So I assembled The Torch and the Blade (Sonnia) for this Friday. The small bits remind of putting together Fine Scale Models so that was not that bad. The bases almost took as long as the figs.

Dark Age Outcast - Mongo SMASH!!!! WIP

Well I am forcing myself to sit down and paint some of my minis. Going to jump back and forth between terrain and painting figs. This is my Outcast crew minus one fig a friend of mine is painting up for me in a miniature swap a group of friends did. I really liked the box art so I decided to copy the idea on a few of my bases. I am not going crazy on these guys because I paint so slow and I need painted minis on the table. I wanted to start with Mongo because he is such a cool fig and plus he smashes things. I am calling the left arm, left leg, side and abs done.
